The artistic walk of life of sculptor Bjorn Weckström is characterised by very impressive series of work, shaped in materials such as bronze, marble, glass and acrylic resin, as well as in often surprising combinations of the above. His distinctive language of expression ranges from abstract form to an individualistic interpretation of realism. Central to the bronze sculptures has been the reinterpretation of classic Greek mythology.
Furthermore, the large sculptures, exploring the interaction between man and machine, outline a profound analysis of the current state of Mankind. The invitation to become a lecturer at the University of Pisa in 1979, led to an important change in his life: thereafter Mr. Weckstrom has spent the majority of his time in Italy. The differences between Italy in terms of the cultural milieu and natural environment, resonate as enriching and fertilising elements in many of his sculptures.
The most distinct period of material bound design in Bjorn Weckstrom's production,are the series of 25 sculptures in acrylic resin, created in 1971-1973. They are inspired by a protest against the kinetic, "noisy" art of the time. Artists like Tinguely, Kovac etc., were going as far as creating sculptures able to self-destruct, highlighting the need to create something immobile, unconditional and lasting.
The self-lit sculptures in acrylic resin demand twilight and peace, solitude. The colour and light silence to meditation. The floating translucent insubstantiality insinuate a silent sacral meditation. A passing interest by the artist in Zen-Buddhism, is conveyed in the introvert, inward nature of the sculptures, revealing uncharted territories within the mind.

Anfagn der 50er Jahre begann langsam die Entwicklung der „Skandinavischen Moderne“, die aber einige Zeit brauchte, um im Schmuckbereich Fuss zu fassen.
Dieses Verdienst steht dem Künstler und Goldschmied Björn Weckström und dem visionären Schmuckunternehmer Pekka Anttila zu. Weckström hatte nach seinem Studium begonnen, seine künstlerischen Fähigkeiten in den Entwurf von Schmuckstücken einfliessen zu lassen. Der Wunsch einer Kundin, Goldnuggets aus Lappland zu verarbeiten, brachte ihn auf die Beschäftigung mit der natürlichen Oberfläche von Gold. Zu Beginn der 60er Jahre markierte er damit die Abwendung vom Konstruktivismus der 50er Jahre. Die Vision eines Schmucks, der von der wilden Schönheit der Natur Lapplands geprägt war, entstand. Weckström reiste von nun an jedes Jahr nach Lappland, wusch Gold und liess sich inspirieren. Seine Kreationen erhielten Namen. 1969 wurde das Buch „Welcome to Finland“ veröffentlicht, indem Finnland vorgestellt wurde und die Werke namhafter finnischer Designer veröffentlicht wurden. Die Schmuckstücke Weckströms prägten so das Bild Finnlands in den Augen der Welt mit.
Pekka Anttila hatte die Entwicklung Weckströms interessiert mit verfolgt und es war für beide der Beginn einer erfolgreichen Partnerschaft, als Anttila 1966 begann, den „Schmuck aus Lappland“ aktiv zu bewerben. Mit visionärer Klarsicht vermarktete er von Anfang den Schmuck nach allen Regeln der Kunst. Ein starker Slogan, Schaufensterdekorationen, Broschüren und Verpackungsmaterial und einer Geschichte zu jedem Schmuckstück etablierte das Unternehmen „Lapponia Jewelry Oy“ nach und nach international. 1971 erhielt die amtierende Miss World ein Schmuckstück von Lapponia, 1972 trug Yoko Ono bei einem Fernsehinterview einen Lapponia-Ring und 1977 zierte das Collier „Planetoid Valley“ den Hals von Prinzessin Leia im Film „Star Wars“. Damit hatte das finnische Design endgültig weltweite Aufmerksamkeit und eine wachsende Fangemeinde erlangt.
