Tattoo Girls
Tattoo Girls sind neue großformatige Gemälde des deutschen Malers Matthias Köster, in denen das Lebensgefühl des Medienzeitalters zwischen Fiktion und Realität in verschiedensten Facetten zum Ausdruck kommt. Der Maler erregt schon seit einigen Jahren mit seinen atemberaubenden Szenen nach Filmen berühmter Regisseure Aufsehen. Er arbeitet ausschließlich in Primamalerei und trägt die Ölfarbe in einem einzigen Arbeitsschritt auf die Aluminium-Paneele auf und erschafft dabei Bilder höchster Lebendigkeit. Seine Frauendarstellungen beziehen sich einerseits auf Medienbilder aus Fernsehen, Musikvideo oder Film, anderseits auf Abbildungen, die das körperliche explizit betonen. Für seine Arbeit nutzt er die Kunstgeschichte ebenso wie zeitgenössische fotografische Quellen. Berühmte Modelle wie Kate Moss oder Naomi Campbell werden in Beziehung zu Meisterwerken der Malerei gesetzt. In der riesigen Arbeit „dresden atelier“ werden glamouröse Modelle in goldfarbenen Kleidern mit der Umrisszeichnung des Ateliers von Ernst Ludwig Kirchner verbunden, die wie ein Scherenschnitt den Grund der Aluminiumplatte sichtbar lässt. Das Mädchen im Gemälde „kitchen“ zeigt großflächige Tätowierungen, unter anderem die berühmten betenden Hände von Albrecht Dürer. Das Zitat der Hände löst sich aus seinem Kontext, wandert von Genre zu Genre und wird zu einem Motiv neben anderen wie Schmetterlingen, einem Segelschiff und dem Louis-Vuitton-Gürtel. Für Köster stellen die gezeigten Körper eine Verkörperung einer Idee dar, eine Erweiterung der Sprache der Kunst und Werbung. Köster geht der Oberfläche auf den Grund, weil er mit ihr arbeitet, sie zerschneidet und neu inszeniert. Die farbenprächtigen Gemälde Matthias Kösters sind zugleich durchscheinend und leuchtkräftig, zauberhaft und sensibel, sie bieten subtile Kommentare zur Gegenwart, zur Auffassung der Wirklichkeit, über menschliches Verhalten und Rollenverständnis, sowie über die Formen der Darstellung in der Kunstwelt an sich.

Tattoo Girls are new works by the German painter Matthias Köster, in which the attitude toward life and media, fiction and reality is depicted and dealt with in a multitude of ways. The painter, who first caused a sensation a few years ago with his breathtaking scenes from movies by famous film directors is always working in the prima-technique, applying oil paint with just one stroke onto aluminum panels, achieving highly vibrant pictures. The female figures are based on the one hand on media images from television, music videos and movies, and on the other hand on contemporary portrayals of women, with a special emphasis on the body. For his work he uses both art history and contemporary photographic sources. Famous models like Kate Moss or Naomi Campbell are integrated into relationships with the masterpieces of paintings. In the monumental painting "dresden atelier" glamorous models in gold dresses are combined with a cut out like image of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's studio, revealing the panel's aluminum surface. The girl in the painting "kitchen" has large scale tattoos, among others are the famous "praying hands" of Albrecht Dürer. Those hands taken out of their context appear in new genres, here they are combined with other tattoos, a ship, butterflies and a Louis-Vuitton-belt. For Köster the body represents the embodiment of an idea, an extension of language and of advertisements. Köster gets beyond the surface by working with the surface, cutting the images and giving new life to them. The colorful paintings of Matthias Köster are both translucent and luminous, enchanting and sensitive, and offer subtle commentary on our present times and its conception of reality, of human behavior and roles in life, as well as on forms of representation in the art world.
