A very fine Edo school ivory netsuke of a shishi and cub, by Gyokuyôsai. Mid-19th century
A large shishi stands above a cub lying on its back, which wards off the parent animal’s playful bites, very fine hair work covering the accurately modelled bodies, the larger animal’s tail rendered with deep undercutting. Signed Gyokuyôsai on a bridge.
