Another world, photography from China

Another world, photography from China

Opening: 23th November 2006, Exhibition: 2006-11-24 until 2007-1-20. - Chi Peng, Miao Xiaochun, Rong Rong & Inri, Shao Yinong & Muchen

The lukasfeichtner Gallery presents in cooperation with the ALEXANDER OCHS GALLERIES BERLIN I BEJING recent positions in photography from a young and uprising generation of Chinese artists on the occasion of the Month of photography.
Photography is used in its whole variety for a critical view on historical backgrounds of China, while taboos are stressed ingeniously to appear as new ironic compositions.
We are pleased that there is an additional possibility to get in touch with contemporary Chinese art in the Sammlung Essl.

The Artists:

Chi Peng (born 1981) is one of the youngest representatives of the Chinese art scene. The subjects of his digitally processed photographs could hardly more topical: Cyberspace-realties, paranoid pursuance, Gender trouble and homosexuality.

Since 2002 Miao Xiaochun (born 1964) works with colour digital technology. His recent works show a new perspective on renowned Renaissance-masterpieces from Michelangelo.

Rong Rong (born 1968) & Inri ( born 1973) do not just work with modern technology. Hand-made prints on lightly wavy baryt paper is subsequently often coloured with dissonant colours. The boundary between photography and painting becomes permeable. Although in Chinese landscape painting the human figure receives extremely little notice and the representation of erotic scenes was taboo in earlier times, Rong Rong & Inri make a clear break with this tradition.

The focus of a documentary or visualisation of a childhood memory, the photo works of the artist duo Shao Yinong (born 1961) & Muchen (born 1970) allow significant places to emerge as eloquent witnesses of their time.
The best-known project is the series Assembly Halls. Some 200 photographs depict former assembly halls from the days of the counter-revolution in their present state. Rooms and objects serve as silent chronicles of fast social change.
