“[…]I created a white painting in which impulses to transcend the symmetry are not driven to transgress the symmetry of the overall pattern, which therefore maintains its closed regularity.
The transgression is all internal and takes place in the relationship between the signs that make up the fabric of the pattern. It is a transgression (disorder) that, through distribution by repetition, leads to a coinciding regularity in itself. In bringing perception into focus, order can become disorder, and vice versa, within an overall symmetry that remains intact. The entropy here is considerable.
The coming and going of order and disorder causes the emergence of the practical function that underlies the aesthetic function, that is to say the signs concurring to from the pattern.
The signs therefore represent an object, but also a tool. When looking at the work, their passage from one function (the aesthetic) to the other (practical), consists of non-topic suspension.
Order-suspension - disorder - suspension - order … sufficiently.” (Agostino Bonalumi, Ho fatto un quadro bianco dove, in: Galleria La Chiocciola (Hg.), Agostino Bonalumi, Padua 1977, o.S.).
